Who am I?

As part of book character day we made up Who am I? clues so hat we could guess the characters each person was dressed as.

We also had a go at using the alpha function and placing ourselves in a scene that made us look like we really were the book character

Museum Visit

As part of our Taonga concept we went to the Whangarei Museum. We had a wonderful day, and were involved in a programme designed by Pippa. We learnt a lot about the history of museums, what a curator does, the taonga that our museum has, and we visited the Kiwi House.

Seascape Artwork

We read Tangaroa's Gift with Mrs Smith and discussed how the artist used intricate patterns to create the background, the colours she used and how she blended them to create a paua effect. We used korus as the main pattern which we dyed, and black vivid to create intricate patterns in the background.

Taonga Art

We created our own taonga design. We used crayon, and thought about using black shading to create a 3D effect. We were only allowed to use white, black and a cold colour. In the background we used warm colours.

Technology

We needed to design boxes for our prayer stones, we were not given a template we needed to create our own. Our design brief was that it must be able to hold our prayer stone and it must have a lid. It took some of us many attempts before we were successful. Each time we had to think about how we could modify our box so it fit the brief.

Taniwha

In Maori we read a book called Taniwha me te Poraka. We decided to create our own pages drawing the Taniwha hiding behind different things. Kia tupato Poraka (watch out!) We will add more pages when they are completed.

The Monarch Butterfly

As part of change we read a book about the Monarch Butterfly. We learnt about the life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and looked at the transformations a butterfly undergoes from a caterpillar to a butterfly. We found a You Tube time lapse clip about this. It was interesting to watch.

Volcano in my Tummy

We have been involved in a programme called Volcano in my Tummy where we learn about anger and how to deal with anger without being violent. Mrs Gullick takes the programme for half an hour each Friday. We made a comic life to show what situations can make us angry.

Dancing Raisins

On Monday we did an experiment to show how strong gas can be. We put raisins into a bottle with soda water in it. Bubbles started to attach themselves to the wrinkles in the raisins and they lifted the raisins to the surface. The bubbles were full of carbon dioxide. When the bubbles popped the raisins sank again.

Exploding milk

Today we looked at what happens when you drop food colouring into water.......(nothing much!)
But when you drop it into milk and add a few drops of detergent then it starts moving and mixing and swirling. This is because the milk has fats and proteins in them. The dishwashing liquid makes the fats and proteins bend and twist. Try this experiment with cream!

Sherbert Fizz

We explored how individual ingredients may not taste very nice on their own however once mixed together the result can be extraordinary! Some were salty, some were sour but sherbert is yummy! It crackles and pops when it is in your mouth. This is because your warm saliva reacts with the citric acid and baking soda.

Elephant toothpaste

We carried out an experiment today called Elephant Toothpaste! It explored a chemical reaction where yeast was the active ingredient. As soon as the yeast was added to the hydrogen peroxide, dishwashing liquid food colouring and warm water it exploded into this frothing mass of foam.
We were so amazed and excited. It was spectacular!!!

Two in One

We participated in a simple experiment where we looked at Optical Illusions!. At the roadshow they made a skeleton look like it was sitting on a chair and running water look like the droplets stopped in mid air. Our experiment looked like a goldfish was swimming in a bowl. This is because the speed of movement was too fast for our eyes and tricked them.

Science Roadshow

On Monday as an immersion activity for our concept this term which is Change. We went to the Science Roadshow. It was a hands on experience and we participated in lots of different scientific activities. It was great to help us think about Science in the world around us.

We held a red and black mufti day for the people of Christchurch. Our class alone raised $60. We pray for the people of Christchurch and we hope our money can go towards helping to get things that they need.

Keeping ourselves safe

As part of our keeping ourselves safe programme, Constable Marnie came to show us what we can do when someone touches us in a way we don't like. This poster shows what we learnt.

Our Pepeha

As part of our Maori programme we have been learning a class pepeha, because we live in Whangarei and are part of a class whanau. It tells you our maunga, awa, waka, marae, iwi, hapu and whanau.

Bike Day

Our school celebrated Bike Day as it is a way to keep fit and healthy. Middle syndicate went out together and set a course for the cyclists. It proved a bit hard because the grass was rather long. However we had fun and had a healthy glow at the end to show all the hard work we were doing!
