We are part of the Bikes in Schools programme. It is a government funded programme, research found that there has been a significant drop in the amount of children who actually ride bikes. It gives children an opportunity to experience this as well as learn how to keep safe on the roads. We had an awesome coordinator called Mr Bell.

Waitangi Trip
These are photos of our Waitangi Trip. We have been learning about The Treaty of Waitangi and who we are as a nation. This gave our children the opportunity to learn more about our history and culture. It was a wonderful day and we highly recommend that whanau take the time to go to Waitangi and visit the new museum.

As part of our Immersion Activities, we had a whanau luck where we were encouraged to bring a healthy lunch. We also participated in tabloid sports. This was to promote being active and also to build our tuakana teina relationships within Karaka Whanau

Hauora
Our concept for Term 1 is Hauora
In Term 1 our concept is “Hauora.”
We are learning that…
Hauora comes from making informed choices,
Jesus guides us to live a restorative way of life.
We are very lucky that we have many outside agencies helping us deliver a deeper understanding of Hauora. We have Nadine from The Life Education Trust. We also have the keeping Ourselves Safe Programme with Constable Toni.
We are lucky that we have the Bikes in Schools Programme as well. As many of you are aware we have a bicycle track, each class will have 3 lessons on how to check and ride a bike, and also bike safety.

Movement
Our concept for term 4 is Movement.
We will be learning that…
"Movement has consequences on people and the way they live.
Inspirational people move us to serve God."
It is a technology, health and well-being, and arts based concept.

Recycled Rockets
One of our last activities was to design and make rockets out of recycled materials. Our creative juices were really flowing!!!!
Whanau Developmental
This term our whanau held two developmental days. The activities children could choose from were make, built, design and do activities related to our concept "Out of this World." It also gave us the opportunity to develop the concept of tuakana teina where our older children help our younger children. The main aim was to also develop our skills of cooperation and problem solving. We all had a lot of fun!!

Planet Poetry
We are trying to sell one of the planets in our solar system. As part of this, children had to create a piece of poetry about their planet. Here is Theo's poem
Saturn
Rings for sale
Rings right here
They're floating outside my atmosphere
Not gold, not silver
But really quite nice
No diamonds here
But cold, cold ice

Planet Art
We used a crayon/ dye resist to create a piece of planet art. We thought about having one central object with one or two planets overlapping in the background. We also thought of a planet we were standing on to create the fore ground.
Space Fantasy Art
We created some space fantasy art with Mrs Smith. We used chalk pastel and had to think of different elements when creating our piece of art. We had to think about balance, composition, overlapping, planets to go right to the edge of the page. We also had to think about where our light source would come from and creating shading to portray 3D planets.
Year 6 Retreat
On Monday our Year 6 children from Rooms 1, 20 and 10 experienced a retreat with Margaret. It was a chance to think deeper about our faith, grow as a community, and make our scriptures come alive through drama. It was a fun filled day!!
Whanau Tabloid Sports
At least 3 times a term our whanau try to get together for a tabloid sports afternoon.
Our class loves organising modified games for the children to play. It is a great chance to live our tuakana teina concept, where we awhi the younger children in our whanau. It is soo much fun!!

Phases of the Moon
Mrs Batchelor was very creative on Friday and children researched the phases of the moon using digital devices. They also used Wheelie biscuits to represent the different phases of the moon. Of course they could eat the biscuits afterwards. The children thoroughly enjoyed this activity.
